How to Block Spam Calls on Your Android Smartphone?
We all get those irritating calls trying to sell us items, loans, credit cards. This keeps happening, again and again, almost every day. During work hours or when we are at some important place this type of calls disturbs our productivity for a while. The problem has increased over the past few years as more and more telemarketers keep calling us. Additionally, not only just the telemarketers but scammers try to scam us through phone calls as well.
Just the other day one scammer called me pretending to be some executive from the bank and was asking for my credit card details. Not everyone is aware of the scammers and sometimes things might look too realistic. But trusting scammers means to lose everything you have. So it is better to be cautious always when dealing about things on the phone. But there’s something more that can be done, blocking spam calls. Here in this article, we will show how to block spam calls on your Android smartphone.
How to Block Spam Calls on Your Android Smartphone?
There can be many ways to block the incoming spam calls on your Android smartphone. There are many third-party apps like Truecaller in the Google Play Store which will do the task for you. You can also use your carrier services and activate DND. Furthermore, if you only get one or two spam calls in a week then you can also block the calls one by one. Lastly, you can only allow your contacts to call. Let’s talk about all four points in detail.
1. Activate DND (Do Not Disturb) through Your Carrier
If you’re getting a lot of promotional messages and calls then you can stop then by activating DND. DND stands for Do Not Disturb. This will also stop promotional calls and messages from your carrier. That means you will not receive any offers by text or phone call and you will need to manually look for it. However, this will save you from tons of spam calls.
To activate this you can go to your carrier’s website and from there you have to activate DND. Other than that, you can also text Start 0 to 1909. This will result in blocking in most types of spam and promotional calls. You can also select only the categories of calls you can block from the list below. Just type Start and then <Category Number> and send it to 1909.
- START 0- Fully blocked
- START 1- Banking, Insurance, Financial products, and credit cards
- START 2- Real Estate
- START 3- Education
- START 4- Health
- START 5- Consumer goods and automobiles
- START 6- Communication, Broadcasting, Entertainment and IT
- START 7- Tourism and Leisure
It is worth noting that this process works for all Indian carriers. You can also stop DND services on your number by sending text STOP DND to 1909. Or else you can use the website of your carrier.
2. Using Third-party Apps
The other way to block unwanted and spam calls it to use dedicated apps for it. There are many third-party apps available on the Google Play Store which can do this job. Truecaller is one of the most famous apps when it comes to blocking spam calls. It has a huge database of numbers which are spam. Additionally, users can also report numbers as spam.
The Truecaller app can block spam calls and messages on its own. However, you can add more numbers to the blocklist of truecaller. Furthermore, you can also search for a number and see who is the person using that phone number. The truecaller app is free for normal use. But there’s a pro version as well. The premium version costs ₹270 per year. The premium version removes ads from the app, see who viewed your profile, view profile in private mode, call recorder, premium badge and much more.
3. Blocking Unwanted Calls One by One
The topics which I mentioned above will work great when there’s a lot of spam calls on your number. However, in case if you get only one or two spam calls in a week then there’s a simple process which you can perform. You can just block the spam calls one by one. This is a very simple process and can be easily done.
First, open the dialer app and then open the call logs. From the recent calls tap on the phone number that you want to block. Once you tap on the phone number you will see a few options. There will be an ‘i‘ button. Tap on that. Now you will see all the previous call sessions and other information on the screen. Below that there will be the option to block. Finally, tap on the Block button. This will result in blocking all the calls from that phone number.
4. Filter Calls and Allow Only Contacts
Finally, there’s another way to defeat telemarketers and scammers. However, this might be overkill. If you don’t get a lot of calls or use the number of work purpose then you can try this process. You can filter calls and just allow your contacts. Now if you do this, any phone number which isn’t saved in your contacts will not be able to call you.
To do this you can just download apps like Call Blocker. The best part is that it is completely free and has been downloaded more than 10 million times on the Play Store. Other than Call Blocker there are many alternatives available, any of these apps should do the work.
Now once you download Call Blocker, go to Settings. Then select Blocking and finally tap on Block all number except contacts. Now if someone calls who is not in your contacts then the call will not come. However, you will be able to see the call in the app itself. As mentioned earlier, this method has its own drawbacks. Anyone who changes their number will not be able to contact you. So be sure to only use it if you are okay with that.
