Google Maps Rolls Out “Stay Safer” Feature for Indian Users
Keeping the safety of Indian users in mind while driving or travelling in a taxi or cab, Google has unveiled the “Stay Safer” feature in Google Maps. This feature will make sure that the user is travelling in the correct direction. Whenever the driver tries to deviate from the actual path, the user will be notified if their driver goes in the wrong direction for more than 0.5 km. The user’s smartphone will vibrate with a notification which they able to tap on and see where they are compared to the original route.
The new feature is an amazing feature that will alert and notify users while traveling in taxis, auto-rickshaws when their vehicle goes off-route and also share the live status of their trips with friends/family. The main goal of this newly rolled out feature is to safeguard people while travelling through public transport.
While announcing the new feature, Product Manager of Google Maps Amanda Bishop, said, “Through our extensive research across India, we found that a lot of people limit their mobility due to safety-related concerns. To address this, we are launching another India-first feature that will deliver a more relevant and reliable experience to our users. Our new ‘Stay Safer’ feature on Google Maps will alert users who are traveling in taxis, auto-rickshaws, etc. in case their vehicle goes off route, giving them peace of mind.”
To use this feature, you need to have the latest version of Google Maps installed on your smartphone. Then you need to open the app and enter your destination and get the directions for that location. A button called “Stay Safer” will be shown at the bottom of the screen. Once you tap on that button, you will get two options called ‘get off-route alerts’ and ‘share live trips’. If you activate the first option, the phone will start buzzing with a notification if the driver deviates more than 0.5km from the Google Maps suggested route. Users can then tap on the notification to see where they are compared to the original route, and speak to the driver about the confusion in route. On activating the “share live trips” option, your live location will be shared with your friends and family members whom you wish to share. This feature helps your friends and family to know your exact location and they can also track your journey for added security.
In the past few weeks, the search giant has rolled out many features in Google Maps. Google Maps allows you to check live train status along with Bus travel times from live traffic. This feature is currently rolled out in only 10 largest cities of the country. This includes Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Chennai, and more.
The “Stay Safer” was noticed earlier this month when it was in the testing phase. This new feature is currently available for only Android users. There is no news on when this new helpful safety feature will roll out for iOS users. But it is expected that it will be soon available for the iOS users too.
